Jean Ayral, étudiant à Dax, entend l'appel du 18 juin 1940 et quitte la France. Arrivé à Gibraltar il s'engage comme Élève Officier à bord d'un bâtiment français avant de rejoindre les Forces Françaises Libres. Il est parachuté en juillet 1942 près de Montluçon. Ayral se verra confier par Jean Moulin la direction du Bureau des Opérations Aériennes en zone Nord. Arrêté par la Gestapo et conduit à l'hôtel Cayré d'où il s'enfuit en plein jour, Jean Ayral fut le 1er soldat allié à entrer à Toulon
