The end technique showed me the reality of an Engram. Ran into one that went back to Third Grade. Pain, and unconsciousness, knocked for a loop. It was affecting my life... People don't realize Dianetics is based on previous Psychological and Emotional research. There were thousands of researchers involved. Mainstream psychologists and others STILL use the knowledge in this book, concept for concept, if not word for word. For example, Hubbard did not invent The Engram. Look up German Emotional Researcher, Richard Semon. 1904. Seven years before Hubbard was born. Hubbard was popularizing Psychology. Double Doctorate, Bill Tollefson described the workings of the mind in an interview, Concept for concept, as I learned Dianetics in the Seventies. Hubbard BORROWED everything, but also expanded with their own research. Dianetics is described as a Science of the Mind.... Not a religeon... That came later. I don't agree with everything LRH says. I don't believe in the Reactive Mind. Per Se... You don't have a reaction without an Association. It is the association that is triggered. Or as they say... Keyed in...

I got into Dianetics and Scientology through this book - about 40 years ago. Through the use of its techniques, I very rapidly kicked some very bad dependencies and turned my life around. Nothing else had that effect, and I'd tried many methods and "routes". Do remember that this book was written in 1950. The average high-school reading level was a LOT higher than it became in the '70's, and literacy levels have been descending ever since, but this book even has a simple remedy for that also. Too bad that the detractors of this book never applied it. If they had, they would understand the premises put forth, and appreciate the book's validity. I would certainly say that I myself was damned skeptical in the beginning, even though I knew that, in principle, the basic assumptions L. Ron Hubbard made about the mind were logical and workable. So, like a child getting into a pool for the first time, I gingerly "put my toe in" and found that I could use the material. I was actually in "test mode" for a few months until I could relax and resolve to just go ahead and use the material fully, on myself and others. The book delivers what it promises. I'm living proof of that. But don't take my word for it.. You have to honestly study it for yourself. You can always contact the organizations listed in the back if you have a problem comprehending it. They are always willing to help and are great people.. That's my story. Thanks for reading it.

What can I say, I was looking for guidance, for hidden truth, for a path in life, and I liked Tom Cruise. I started reading the hype about this book that the church puts out. I really dedicated myself to getting in to the church of the stars. I ordered the book and read on and on. And on and on. It makes some big claims about research and science that Hubbard apparently exhaustively conducts, but there's very little detail. It's all very vague. It's not like reading a science text book at all, but you can see how it tries to be. If you've ever read the Book of Mormon and got a sense of how it was trying too hard to sound like the Christian Bible, well Dianetics is sort of like that with science. I'm not a scientist, and the most I usually read from anything peer-reviewed is the abstract, but even within those, scientists tell you about the holes in the research, where more work is needed, how it could all be wrong. Hubbard is the polar opposite. If there's a hole, it's because you're illiterate, he says. Early on in the book he stresses that the only way you could fail to understand or agree is if you don't understand the terminology he uses, ie. makes up. Try as I might to keep on top of it, the claims and the theory did not come full circle. I was truly disappointed. But let me say, if you are not currently part of this... group called Scientology, you are more fortunate than you know. What I would learn later about this church is disturbing beyond your wildest dreams. This is the book that started it all, and to me it's something of a crime against humanity. The claims in this book, all lies, drew in innocent people that met their doom in some form of another. If you start to research it, you'll think it was just a few incidents, then a few more. But give it enough time and you might realize that this organization has left a gaping wound worldwide, something no one can begin to mend because of their tactics in keeping to out of reach.
