About this ebook

In the new Eve Dallas police thriller from #1 New York Times-bestselling author J. D. Robb, what looked like a lover’s quarrel turned fatal has larger—and more terrifying—motives behind it...

The scene in the West Village studio appears to be classic crime-of-passion: two wineglasses by the bed, music playing, and a young sculptor named Ariel Byrd with the back of her head bashed in. But when Dallas tracks down the wealthy Upper East Side woman who called 911, the details don’t add up. Gwen Huffman is wealthy, elegant, comforted by her handsome fiancé as she sheds tears over the trauma of finding the body—but why did it take an hour to report it? And why is she lying about little things?

As Eve and her team look into Gwen, her past, and the people around her, they find that the lies are about more than murder. As with sculpture, they need to chip away at the layers of deception to find the shape within—and soon they’re getting the FBI involved in a case that involves a sinister, fanatical group and a stunning criminal conspiracy.

After the testosterone flow unleashed in Book number 51, Shadows in Death, of the "In Death" series when Roarke and arch-enemy from the distance past, Cobbe, resorted to fisticuffs as a form of justice before Cobbe was taken into custody and prosecuted for his global assignation pogrom, I found the enormous amount of time spent in Book number 52, Faithless in Death, describing the LT’s coordination of the strike force to be used against the Natural Order a waste of writing. Because of that, it did not display any of Eve’s abilities we have read before in other books, notably the international takedown of Cobbe. Also, ,Robb’s use of the current political climate as a backdrop for the philosophies of the Trump reign of four years makes me wonder how relevant that might be in, say, ten years. Let us hope that there will be no trump presidential candidacy in 2024 that revives the beliefs of subjugating women and segregation by race, class, and sex. Robb’s use of these plot devices is, in and of itself, not objectionable but appears too facile for a series until the last two books I had bought and read with delight. That delight has morphed into boredom, something I regret. It also makes me wonder if this series has run its course, much like Evanovitch’s Plum series has reached a terminus. As a Robb fan who has bought all the "In Death" books, I saddens me to write this critique but someone must raise this objection. Thank you.

I love this series. JD Robb creates strong characters. Lt. Eve Dallas and her filthy rich former bad boy husband Roark, make a good team. Along with Dallas's team with the NYPD cases are closed, killer's are apprehended and justice is served. I had never got the audo book before so I decided to this time. If you are thinking about getting the audio, my advice is Don't do it!! The same great characters are there, the action is just as good as her usual work. It's all there. But the narration is horrible. It's As if she is trying too hard to make the individual characters her own, but it doesn't work. Somehow her voice just makes them Irritating. I really wish I had just bought the printed version. If it weren't for that, I would rate it 5 stars

I do not care what anyone says, Nora's political views were not really in this book to me. They reflected the climate that the world was in last year, but not necessarily her own. She has done amazing with this series and I am glad to get this book and read it like all the others. Politics plays a huge role in Policing so she brought it into the book. Love these books. I always miss them when they are not out. Cannot wait for the next one.
