It is honorable to be the author of the pioneer Maritime English course book in Türkiye and also privileged to present second revised edition, having been informed that this course book has been taught at several maritime schools, institutions, faculties.Seafaring has been getting highly multicultural since the last decades and working in the oceans requires high adaptation and linguistic competency of seafarers. English is not a language we should know but already a must in our social life as a citizen of the world; in other words English is the appropriate medium to gain our freedom understanding the world let alone our professional life and status. As Maritime English is surely accepted and approved to be the lingua franca of seafaring by IMO, the linguistic competency is of primarily significance in the professional competency. Therefore this book aims to prepare cadets for marine life, enhancing the skills of reading, writing speaking and listening, and utilizing digital sources on a specific theme.While producing, compiling, developing the materials and sequencing the objectives in this book, not only my personal experience of teaching Maritime English almost 30 years but also academic studies stood by me besides the feedback from the cadets of ITUMF who have been at sea and at faculty.This book aims to prepare and guide prospective Turkish deck and engine officers, crew members in their professional life to be able to communicate in English efficiently and effectively.Reading passages are based on the curriculum required by the Ministry, and the linguistic content of all skills is in accordance with the STCW requirements besides all units are designed within the framework of communicative approach.13 units are enriched with the skills of; Grammar sections; most common tenses, patterns in maritime use are sequenced and designed in each unit, Reading tasks; original texts, comprehension questions in different forms, Writing tasks; rephrasing statements, paragraph writing, Speaking tasks; pair work & small group work and discussion, Vocabulary; frequent words in maritime use are carefully selected and used in the reading passages, placed in sample statements, Googling tasks; finding information for writing and speaking, SMCP structured sections; depending on the contents of the units, YouTube sections to make the content vivid and motivating, 4 tests with 80 questions to make the cadets self-study and evaluation, Most characters, names of places, vessels are national basis-namely Turkish.
