**WHAT PEOPLE ARE SAYING**

"I personally believe this kind of content is excellent for learning—being able to read the story and also hear it in audio or video format really helps. As a first-generation Habesha living in a Western country—like in Europe, North America, and others—I can read it to my son, who is second-generation. For those who can’t read Tigrigna, listening repeatedly can truly help them connect with the language and culture."

"I started to read [Gaby's] book. It’s teaching me a lot about a cultura I’d never known. Gracias!"

- Pedro Ramirez-Lopez-Robledo, retired professor of English and Chicano Literature

"I love the warmth and realism of each story. I like reading them over and over. The ability to watch the animated version is so much fun!"

- Gean Van Horn, marketer and sales pro with 30+ years of experience (and the author's dad)

"This is a great story and a great tool! I love the background and the story as told from a child's perspective. The history and cultural insights are fun and helpful. The questions written at the end of each section are helpful prompts to practice speaking in the target language. I would recommend this to anyone hoping to improve their language skills in English or Tigrinya!"

- African American doing volunteer work with Habesha communities in Europe

"The story is truly unique, and I appreciate the way it’s been told. The narration adds something special. As a father of three, I often find it challenging to find stories we can share with our children to help them develop their listening skills. That’s why this one stood out. It offers something meaningful, both in content and in how it engages young minds."

About the author

Gaby Van Horn is an African American educator, writer, and entrepreneur based in Frankfurt, Germany. She is the creator of Tigrinlish, a groundbreaking bilingual storytelling project that brings English and Tigrinya together through modern short stories.

Her first book, Tigrinlish Volume One: Love Served with Injera, introduces Binyam, a bicultural nine-year-old boy exploring his heritage through the lives of his parents and grandparents. Mixing heartfelt storytelling with language learning, the book features QR codes for companion videos and is designed for both diaspora families and readers curious about Habesha culture.

This is just the beginning: more Tigrinlish stories are already in the works, continuing the journey across love, family, and identity.

As founder of Clever Hybrids, Gaby has worked in bilingual education and digital media since 2020, but her deepest passion lies in building bridges between languages and generations—one story at a time.

Sium is Gaby Va Horn’s husband and a native Tigrinya speaker from Western Eritrea - Aqordet.

He double-checked Gaby’s translations for this story to make sure they used phrases native speakers use in everyday life. He is very supportive of her work to help both sides of the diaspora - those who want to learn Tigrinya and those who want to improve their English, like him.
