Elnora and her mother live on the edge of Limberlost Swamp, in Indiana. Katharine partly blames her daughter because her husband died in the swam as she was giving birth to Elnora. As Elmora begins high school in town, she learns just how much she has lost by her mother's neglect, but determines to make a success in high school, despite having to earn her own way. To earn money for clothes, books and tuition, Elnora hunts and sells wild plants and beautiful butterflies. After Elnora finally reconciles with her mother, a young man, Philip Ammon arrives to recuperate from an illness. While he helps Elnora collect her specimens, the two fall in love, but Philip is already engaged to another woman.
