About the author

Mehmet Gökay ÖZERİM is the Chair of the Department of International Relations at Yaşar University and the Director of the EU Jean Monnet Centre of Excellence (EU Research Center). He completed his undergraduate studies in International Relations at Dokuz Eylül University, followed by a master’s degree in European Union studies and a doctoral degree in European Studies. In 2010, he was awarded the prestigious Chevening Scholarship by the British Government, which enabled him to serve as a visiting researcher at the Center for Migration, Policy, and Society at the University of Oxford. In 2014, he furthered his academic experience as a visiting academic at the University of California, Berkeley, and in 2022, he held a similar position in the Department of Political Science at the University of Amsterdam. Since 2016, Prof. Dr. Özerim has been recognized for his innovative teaching, with his course titled “Migration – Security Nexus in the EU” being selected as an EU Jean Monnet Module. In 2019, he received a Jean Monnet Chair on “Migration in Turkey-European Relations” from the European Commission, and in 2022, he was appointed as the coordinator of the Jean Monnet Centre of Excellence on Diversity Studies. He is an active member of the Youth Researchers team (PEYR) at the Council of Europe. Since 2004, Prof. Dr. Özerim has been engaged in various national and international projects and has published extensively on topics related to international migration, youth, security, and European integration, contributing significantly to the academic discourse both nationally and internationally.
