About this ebook

A Wes Darling Sailing Mystery/Thriller, Book 1

For some people working in the family business means suits, power lunches, and afternoon meetings. For Wes Darling it was guns, lies, and dead bodies. The Darling Detective Agency was founded in 1876 by Aaron "Dusty" Darling. Now Wes’s chain smoking, stressed out mother is grooming Wes to take over. How does he handle his mother’s demands? He heads to Key West, moves onto a sailboat, and takes a job tending bar at a little joint called Dirty Alvin’s.

Life is carefree until his mother’s lover, a man who mentored Wes for years, is murdered on a Key West beach. Reluctantly, Wes is drawn into a spinning web of murder, sex and deceit. First there are his mother’s pleas for help. Throw in a six-foot tall red-headed stripper, a retired mobster who acts like it’s the 1940’s, a pair of dim-witted hit men, a phobic psychic named Elvis, a small fortune in stolen diamonds, and what do you have? Mayhem in Key West.

This slightly humorous mystery about an ex-private investigator who runs away from responsibility to live the good life is bound to make you wish you could do the same.

Had the feeling I was reading Travis McGee lite. That may seem insulting, but it's not intended: enjoyable read.😁

This story had a great rhythm as everything unfolded. I appreciated the ending too - not too overly happily ever after, a little bit messy.

At first seemed OK but later found it difficult to get in to

About the author

In 2003 my wife, Mary, and I moved aboard our 36-foot sailboat, Rough Draft. We brought the boat down the inland river system from Minnesota to Mobile, Alabama where we lived for two years docked at a small marina, the setting for Dog River Blues.

After rescuing and repairing our boat from Hurricane Katrina, we then sailed to Florida where we spent three months living at a mooring in Key West. From there we cruised up the east coast to Ft. Lauderdale where we lived on the boat and I wrote for six years.

We hoisted the sails once again in the spring of 2012, traversed the Gulf Stream, and explored the Abaco Islands until hurricane season sent us back to Florida. We spent hurricane season in Cape Canaveral, and then in January of 2013 we sailed back to the Bahamas where we lived at anchor for three months basking in the sun, fighting the elements, and writing.

On this most recent trip I completed the first draft of Stranded Naked Blues, the third book in my Wes Darling Mystery series, which is set in the Bahamas and is now available. My other books include Key Lime Blues and Dog River Blues, my two Wes Darling Mysteries, and my historical thriller, The Storm Killer. My psychological thriller, Mind Demons, was written before we moved aboard Rough Draft.
