About this ebook

The days blend together as you hole up at home for the nth week running. Who knows what the next pandemic update will bring? Who knows when we'll meet another living person? Or how?

NutMag 5: Lost channels all our pandemic feelings, exploring our fragile grip on reality, the disconnect we feel with others as we quarantine and self-isolate, and grapples with the presence of death and loss.

About the author

Originally from Scotland, Ali Gallo has lived in Africa and now Malaysia, which has taught her that running water, reliable internet, and good cheese are luxuries that should not be taken for granted. She writes short plays, sketches, books, blogs, and shopping lists—but not necessarily in that order. She has published a series of novellas and a book of short stories on Amazon and just finished the fourth ‘First Person Singular’ novella and various blog posts when not distracted by shiny objects.

Celine Wu is D O N E with everything right now. More than ever, she would like to escape into a magical world of her own making and ignore whatever consequences may come. Unfortunately, she's stuck in this realm trying to make a living like everyone else. In her free time she reads and complains about her various craft projects (among other things).

Meet the founder and co-organiser of Poetry Jam Asia, Diyaa

Diyaa is a full-time writer, editor, proofreader, and social media manager based somewhere in Selangor. When they are not writing for work, they write for fun. Their works are usually found under their pseudonyms, Serendipity and NightShade. They write poetry and prose about fantasy, feminism, human rights, and the environment. When they occasionally venture out of their hidey-hole, you might find one of their alters spouting poetry on a stage. Or just gazing off into space.

JY Tan was born in 2000 and raised in Penang, where she learned to love the food but hate the traffic. After moving to Semenyih, Selangor for her Creative Writing degree at Nottingham Malaysia, she learnt to tolerate the food and loathe the traffic with a burning passion.

Depending on the time of year, she’s either staying in Penang, travelling to and from Penang, or complaining about Penang, all while pretending Twitter is a good enough replacement for her semi-abandoned blog.

Lee Chow Ping loves aircraft and books. She lives near an airport in a home perpetually overrun by books.

Lucille Dass dubs herself a 'seenager.' A former lecturer, who continues to enjoy word-work, having inked a few publications of the scholarly and non-scholarly kind. Coffee is her sparkplug for most writeups! She resorts to poetry when mood, muse, or madness prompt ("O! that way madness lies" - Shakespeare). What results may be:

- the vaguely vacuous verse

- the purely puerile

-the occasionally contemplative

-or simply FUN...& why not!

Petrina Anthony writes poems that have been published in a book called “Poetry Side of Tumblr” & featured on The Cloud Appreciation Society website. Her poems are mostly based on children’s literature and the advice that she gives to herself. As a former writer for both print media and advertising, she gained many experiences from the industry and now does freelance copy editing in George Town, Penang.

Rebecca Vega is an editor, writer, embroidery enthusiast, and bibliophile. Her current writing projects explore our relationships with mental health, social media, and the shifting social landscapes of Gen-Z. She is also managing plant parenthood with hopes of expanding her green family soon.

Qian Fang, otherwise known by 90% of her friends as just Yeap, would love for you to know her as an enthusiastic person in love with intellectual ideas. She has an unusual affinity for foraying into random endeavours, like raising chicks and memorising the location of every country on the map during the lockdown. A master of procrastination, she is permanently loud and destined to be small. She is probably knitting, squealing over baby videos or listening to philosophy podcasts she thinks will make her smart as you are reading this.

Yee Heng Yeh currently works  as a Mandarin-to-English translator while writing in his spare time. His poetry has been featured in The KITA! Podcast, adda, Home Groan: A NutMag Anthology, and Malaysian Millennial Voices. You can find him on Twitter at @HengYeh42

Interior designer by day, illustrator by night, Belle Saw is an art & design enthusiast and has a strong curiosity about architecture. Despite settling in London, her heart has always been with her hometown, Penang Island, where she is exposed to rich local culture and cuisines. Her hobbies include travelling, visiting exhibitions and reading. She aspires to bring joy and inspiration to people through her creations and to promote art & design in Malaysia.

Anna Tan grew up in Malaysia, the country that is not Singapore. She writes fantastical stories and fairy tales, and has short stories included in various anthologies. She is also the editor of NutMag, an annual zine published for and by MYWriters Penang.

Anna has an MA in Creative Writing: The Novel under a Chevening scholarship and is the current President of the Malaysian Writers Society. She is interested in Malay/Nusantara and Chinese legends and folklore in exploring the intersection of language, culture, and faith. She can be found tweeting as @natzers and forgetting to update annatsp.com.
