In a discontented kingdom, civil war is brewing. Sage knows that Conner's motives are more than questionable, yet his life balances on a sword's point -- he must be chosen to play the prince or he will certainly be killed. But Sage's rivals have their own agendas as well.As Sage moves from a rundown orphanage to Conner's sumptuous palace, layer upon layer of treachery and deceit unfold, until finally, a truth is revealed that, in the end, may very well prove more dangerous than all of the lies taken together. An extraordinary adventure filled with danger and action, lies and deadly truths that will have readers clinging to the edge of their seats. And don't miss the highly anticipated fourth book in the series, The Captive Kingdom, coming October 2020!

It's not that I had to suffer through this book. I might even reread it one day, but I definitely had to force myself to open it back up several times. I really liked the wit of the main character, but I felt like it was a pretty predictable storyline.

Finish it in one sitting because you just can't put it down whilst wondering what would happen next. Layers of stories and its vague characters making the plot twist came out to be so unexpected.

I loved this book and I have read the second, I didn't even want to put it down. It is exciting with lots of twists and turns, even if you can guess the ending, the story will never be over. There is no end to the amazing plot twists that happen through out this book. Probably the book that kept me on my toes the most was this book alone. This book is just PERFECT, Jennifer Nielsen knows how to write a good book.
