About the author

Jerzy Smardzewski is a full professor of wood technology, since 1986 he has worked at the Department of Furniture Design, Faculty of Wood Technology, Poznan University of Life Sciences, Poland.

Graduating from the Technical School of Wood Technology (secondary school) in 1981 and in 1986 from the Faculty of Wood Technology in Poznan. Since 2002 he has been a full professor of wood technology, speciality of furniture design and since 2008 he has headed the Department of Furniture Design.

Professor Smardzewski has written 6 books, 371 articles, and 11 patent applications teaching subjects such as Construction of furniture, Technology of furniture, Ergonomics of furniture and history of furniture at the university. Since 1997 till 2001 he was a director in office furniture factory at Balma S.A.

This book addresses one of the most important material categories: Materials used for constructions. A large percentage of the gross national product of most co- tries goes into infrastructure and buildings. This statement is true not only for the present but for most other periods in history, and for most cultures. This explains why understanding the behavior of construction materials has always been the - ject of intense investigations. The construction industry consumes extreme v- umes of material, and the growing demand for quality and safety require conti- ous improvement of materials and material compositions. A deep understanding of material behavior is essential to enable efficient construction: light-weight or heavily burdened structures ask for the development of innovative composites or new material compositions. Rapid economic growth and a dense and growing population require sensitive and sustainable use of resources. Finally efficient use of resources means extending the usage of existing structures, so non-destructive testing methods are needed to assess the safety and utility of these structures. Civil Engineers and Material Scientists from all over the world are openly d- cussing ideas for new materials, and for structural health monitoring. Over the last decade many innovations have come to fruition, primarily in the field of comp- ites but also for improving the design of existing material. This is especially true for concrete, perhaps the most used material in the world – broadening its range of applications and improving performance.
This book contains the contributions from the RILEM International Symposium on Materials and Joints in Timber Structures that was held in Stuttgart, Germany from October 8 to 10, 2013. It covers recent developments in the materials and the joints used in modern timber structures. Regarding basic wooden materials, the contributions highlight the widened spectrum of products comprising cross-laminated timber, glulam and LVL from hardwoods and block glued elements. Timber concrete compounds, cement bonded wood composites and innovative light-weight constructions represent increasingly employed alternatives for floors, bridges and facades. With regard to jointing technologies, considerable advances in both mechanical connections and glued joints are presented. Self-tapping screws have created unprecedented options for reliable, strong as well as ductile joints and reinforcement technologies. Regarding adhesives, which constitute the basis of the jointing/laminating technology of modern timber products, extended options for tailor-made bonding solutions have to be stated. Apart from melamine-urea and phenolic-resorcinol adhesives, one-component-polyurethanes, emulsion isocyanate polymers and epoxies offer a wide range of possibilities. The contributions dealing with experimental and numerical investigations on static, cyclic and seismic behavior of structures clearly reveal the enhanced potential of modern timber construction for reliable and sustainable buildings and bridges of the new millennium.
