《投筆膚談》是一部系統論述古代戰爭、國防、治軍與作戰指導的明代重要軍事理論著作。約成書於明代中葉后，現有萬歷三十二年（公元1604年）陳汝忠弘錫堂刊本《音注武經七書》之附刻本存世。全書共二卷，約二萬五千字。作者隱其姓氏，僅在卷前之《投筆膚談引》中署名「西湖逸士」；而該書上、下卷之卷端則明確題寫「浙江解元鍾吳何守法撰音點注」。「西湖逸士」與何守法的生平事跡均不見文獻記載。二人是否為一人，目前學術界雖無定論，但筆者認為，西湖逸士即何守法。理由如下：我們在翻閱前面所述弘錫堂刊本《音注武經七書》過程中，發現兩點值得注意的現象：其一、《音注武經七書》二十八卷的各卷卷端皆題「浙江解元鍾吳何守法校音點注」，與《投筆膚談》各卷卷端所題「浙江解元鍾吳何守法撰音點注」，僅有「校」與「撰」一字之別。然而，恰是這一字之別，卻為我們考證《投筆膚談》作者的真實姓名，提供了十分重要韻線索。（博客來）
