“ತ್ರಯೀ” ಎಂದರೆ ವೇದ. “ಪ್ರಹಸನ”—ಎಂದರೆ ನಗು, ಗಟ್ಟಿಯಾದ ನಗು, ಅಟ್ಟಹಾಸ—ಇಂಥ ನಗುವಿಗೆ ಕಾರಣವಾದ ಪ್ರಬಂಧ, ಇಂಥ ನಗುವನ್ನುಂಟುಮಾಡುವಂಥ ಪ್ರಬಂಧ. ಒಂದಾನೊಂದು ಪದಾರ್ಥವು ಅಥವಾ ಸನ್ನಿವೇಶವು ಸಾಮಾನ್ಯವಾಗಿ ರೂಢಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಹೇಗಿರುತ್ತದೋ ಹಾಗಿರದೆ ಹೆಚ್ಚುಕಡಮೆಯಾಗಿದ್ದಾಗ ನಗುವು ಬರುತ್ತದೆ. ಅದನ್ನು ಹಾಸ್ಯವೆನ್ನುತ್ತೇವೆ. ಮೂರು ಕೃತಿಗಳು ಪ್ರಹಸನ ತ್ರಯೀ ಎಂಬ ಸಂಕಲನಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಸೇರಿದ ಮೂರು ಪ್ರಕರಣಗಳು. ಮೊದಲನೆಯ ಜಾಕ್ ಕೇಡ್, ಷೇಕ್ಸ್ ಪೀಯರನ ಆರನೇ ಹೆನ್ರಿ ನಾಟಕದಿಂದ ಆಯ್ದ ಭಾಗ. ನಮ್ಮ ದೇಶದ ಸ್ವಾತಂತ್ರ್ಯೋತ್ತರ ದಿನಗಳಿಗೆ ಹೇಳಿ ಮಾಡಿಸಿದಂತಿರುವ ಪ್ರಸಂಗ. ‘ಮಹಾಚುನಾವಣೆ’ ಎಂಬ ಲಾವಣಿಯಾಗಲಿ, ‘ಗರ್ದಬವಿಜಯ’ ಎಂಬ ಪ್ರಸಂಗವಾಗಲಿ ನಮ್ಮ ದೇಶದ ಸಮಕಾಲೀನ ರಾಜಕೀಯ ಸಂದರ್ಭಗಳನ್ನು ಲೇವಡಿ ಮಾಡುವ ಉದ್ದೇಶದಿಂದಲೇ ರಚಿತವಾದವು.
