Die Morgensonne stieg über die Dächer und weckte Dinah aus dem Schlaf. Nach kurzem Dahindämmern warf sie die Decke ab und stieg aus dem Bett. Barfuß tappte sie zur Waschkommode und schaute in den Spiegel an der Wand. Hübsch, dachte sie. Ich sehe aus wie Mom, als sie so alt war wie ich.
Es klopfte. "Es ist Punkt acht Uhr", sagte der Hoteldiener durch die Tür. "Sind Sie wach, Miss Rodgers?"
"Ja, danke." Dinah goss aus der Kanne Wasser in die Schüssel. Während sie sich wusch, freute sie sich schon auf das Treffen mit ihrem Vater. Er hatte versprochen, mit ihr zum Gold Canyon zu reiten. Dad war Frühaufsteher; bestimmt saß er bereits unten im Foyer und wartete ungeduldig.
Fünf Minuten später erkannte Dinah Rodgers, dass sie sich grausam geirrt hatte...
