About this ebook

An inspiring story of survival and our powerful bond with man's best friend, in the aftermath of the nation's most notorious case of animal cruelty.

Animal lovers and sports fans were shocked when the story broke about NFL player Michael Vick's brutal dog fighting operation. But what became of the dozens of dogs who survived? As acclaimed writer Jim Gorant discovered, their story is the truly newsworthy aspect of this case. Expanding on Gorant's Sports Illustrated cover story, The Lost Dogs traces the effort to bring Vick to justice and turns the spotlight on these infamous pit bulls, which were saved from euthanasia by an outpouring of public appeals coupled with a court order that Vick pay nearly a million dollars in "restitution" to the dogs.

As an ASPCA-led team evaluated each one, they found a few hardened fighters, but many more lovable, friendly creatures desperate for compassion. In The Lost Dogs, we meet these amazing animals, a number of which are now living in loving homes, while some even work in therapy programs: Johnny Justice participates in Paws for Tales, which lets kids get comfortable with reading aloud by reading to dogs; Leo spends three hours a week with cancer patients and troubled teens. At the heart of the stories are the rescue workers who transformed the pups from victims of animal cruelty into healing caregivers themselves, unleashing priceless hope.

Includes an 8-page photo insert.

I don't doubt it's a beautiful story. I just couldnt read past the horrible tragic reality of the lives of dogs forced to fight. It makes me sick to my stomach and I want to murder people who could do that to any animal But Especially THE PIT BULL! THE most gentle, people oriented, comedians of the dog world. This breed is so eager to please and just wants to be loved so to read stories about how they get tortured and killed just really pisses me off. I love pit bulls and know almost all are redeemable even after being fighting dogs. I've seen it with my own eyes. I've rescued pit bulls ,fostered pit bulls, lived with 12 in the last 20 years and never knew a vicious one. Even after being abused they still are so trusting of people. I recommend anyone suffering from social anxiety or depression adopt a pit bull, they work better than any anti depression medicine I've ever known..Better then any other breed hands down.

I have just finished this book. It is a must read. It doesn't matter if you love or hate pitbulls or dogs for that matter. The story is so much more than about the case or even the dogs its a universal story about the spirit in all living things put on this earth. How we are all connected in some way or another you will identify with at least one soul in this book. It is a story of redemption I dare you to read it walk away unchanged or unenlightened to some degree.

It is very easy to get emotional about this subject matter. I am a retired Kindergarten teacher, and have become a volunteer dog walker at our local Humane Society, where we do see many pit bulls. This has helped me to understand, appreciate and love these amazing pups. We have our own "little army" of dog walkers who stand strong with our pit bulls, as well as all other pups that come our way. Thank you Mr. Gorant for telling this story in a manner we can all understand, in spite of how awful it was for these pups. This book will serve as an educational tool so together we can all be more understanding and compassionate when interacting with dogs. Each pup is an individual, and deserves the chance to have a healthy, loving environment. Together with an educated society, I will remain hopeful this is possible. đŸ’œđŸ¶
