This book was such a fresh take on the zombie genre. First off, instead of calling zombies 'zombies' they are referred to as hungries, which seems more accurate and reasonable. M. R. Carey gives clear, scientific explanations for what zombies are, and this science portion played a part in the plot which I found very interesting. Most zombie novels just take as granted that yes, there are zombies, and yes, they are dangerous, no, we don't know why they're like that or where they came from. But this book was more than just science -- it had an excellent plotline with relatable, real characters, and the bonds between characters were beautifully believable. The main character, Melanie, has personality, quirk, and intelligence, something not typically found in a post-apocalyptic zombie novel, and most strikingly, Melanie is a young girl. This book is definitely a huge page-turner and although not especially frightening, will keep you hooked till the very end. SPOILER ALERT The most striking aspect of this book to me was that the main character (Melanie) was actually a hungry herself. This added to character relations and the drama that kept me turning pages. I would definitely recommend this book even to people who don't enjoy reading or don't enjoy the zombie genre!

Really kept me wanting more after each page I read. It's not a classic take on zombies which makes it unique. Also, the amount of knowledge and dedication that went into explaining what "cordyceps" is, how it might behave in humans is astonishing. This should be on everyone's must read list. Every charachter has something about themselves that makes them interesting and the decisions they make are reasonable and not stupid and nothing is overlooked or left hanging. Reckless writing is non-existent. What makes this surreal is the fact that "cordyceps" in ants is very real and interesting and by far the closest thing to "zombie apocalypse" we have and the way the author explains this is very vividly written. 10/10 would recommend.

With the succes of the tv show "The walking dead" there has been an explosion of zombie movies, videogames, and books, and most of the products are very bad. This story is about zombies but there's a major twist and its unlike any other undead book I've read so far
