This book describes treatment of urban solid waste with reference to the principles or steps of ISWM especially in the Indian context. Both engineering and management practices have been discussed in detail. Characteristics of urban solid waste are influenced by the economic and social status of the generators and the climatic conditions. Therefore Indian scenario of the generation and treatment of urban solid waste is explained in the backdrop of international status. Since the field is an interdisciplinary one, environmental and public health issues are also addressed. About the author

Sampa Chakrabarti, PhD, is Professor, Department of Chemical Engineering, University of Calcutta, West Bengal. She obtained her BSc (Chemistry), BTech, MTech, and PhD degrees in Chemical Engineering from University of Calcutta, India. Before pursuing her PhD on the application of chemical engineering for environmental remediation, she worked in reputed engineering consultancy organizations in India for 11 years. Dr. Chakrabarti has published more than 60 research papers in reputed journals and conferences and has over 1500 citations. Her research interests are light and ultrasound assisted advanced oxidation processes for environmental remediation and sonochemical synthesis of nanoparticles with several applications, including synthesis of smart surfaces. Her particular interest lies in using sunlight for environmental remediation. She has also worked as a visiting researcher at State University of New York at Buffalo, NY, USA and Washington University in St. Louis, MO, USA. She holds an Indian patent for the value added product from solid waste. Another patent application has been filed on a solar reactor. She published a book entitled Solar Photocatalysis for Environmental Remediation with TERI, New Delhi in 2018. She has also published several scientific articles in little magazines in simple Bengali to popularize science among common people.
