I'm shocked at my rating and this review I'm about to make. Ani's series is by far my favorite by Laura Greenwood but this book fell flat for me. It seemed more like a "filler" book than one that should be in the series. Yes Ani, Nik and Matia are cute as ever. Yes the Pharaoh passed so EVERY Anubis Blessed and their jackals are in Egypt. However, with Ani being young she is relegated to the mummification of the hundreds of animals. She does end up delegating all the Blessed Priests in the animals room. Ani gets a new revelation about Nik and Iset, the next Pharaoh, befriends Ani and gifted her something that's symbolic two fold. I just didn't find substance to this. Now that doesn't mean I disliked it, I was just disappointed.

An empire grieves… Ani, the Blessed Priestess of Anubis, is called to Cairo for the mummification of the dead king. House hunting with Nik will be delayed until safer the funeral. In Cairo, she gets her first taste of politics and will be happy when Nik arrives to keep her out of trouble. Her worries about encountering Ramses pale when a summons arrives from an even more important royal. This story intertwines ancient gods with modern-day technology and romance. It makes for enjoyable reading.

I loved reading this part of Nik and Ani’s story. The change of pace and plans that come from going to Egypt were fun for me to read. There was some overlap with Iset’s story where I second guessed myself because I wondered if I read a certain part already before I realize it was a different viewpoint for the scene. I received a free copy of this book and am voluntarily leaving a review.
