A Simple Mistake Unravels a Dark Conspiracy

When social worker Billy Jo McCabe mistakenly picks up the wrong file, she stumbles upon a shocking mystery—one that was never meant to be uncovered. What begins as an innocent error soon spirals into a twisted secret involving a high-ranking official within the Department of Child and Family Services.

Despite her efforts to alert newly appointed police chief Mark Friessen, he’s skeptical—until they uncover dozens more files detailing missing funds and forgotten at-risk children now living on the streets. But what they find next is even more disturbing than missing money. As they dig deeper, the truth threatens to expose a web of corruption that could bring the entire system crashing down.

From New York Times and USA Today bestselling author Lorhainne Eckhart, The Children is a gripping new Billy Jo McCabe mystery that will keep you hooked until the very last page.

Beyond your worst nightmares! Accidentally picking up the wrong file, Billy Jo finds a check made out to a young child and signed over to her case worker. Horrific discoveries are made and uncovered. Shady figures, including the now retired case worker might be implicated, and the biggest surprise to me is not the likely links to entities dark and dangerous. My biggest shock was the Mark and Billy Jo failed to make timely copies of the evidence. Twisted and horrifying. Though they face shadowy and dangerous forces, Mark and Billy Jo seem yo be moving closer to long term - if they can survive. Keeps you reading to the last page intrigue.

Mark and Billy Jo have a mystery on their hands when Billy Jo accidentally picks up the wrong file. Taking her discovery to Mark will have them embarking on a case that will blow the system wide apart and putting Billy Jo's credibility on line. Will they find the culprit who has abused the very children they were supposed to protect? Once again Ms. Eckhart has woven a story that is so intriguing and realistic, it will draw you in and have you on the edge of your seat devouring the pages to see how this story ends. I am volunteering to leave a review for an ARC of this book.

Mark and Billy Jo never thought they would find so many secrets in one place, and this one regarding the children is the worst one so far. Will they be able to uncover the whole truth? Will Mark be able to accept that a partial truth is better than none as far as evil is exported from the island? How will Billy Jo's father help and counsel regarding this case? The story in The Children is a burden to our society and a huge problem worldwide and Lorhainne Eckhart does call for our attention when writing about this issue.
