This isn't a survival guide. There are plenty of those — they'll tell you how much water to bring and what sunscreen to use. This is something different.
It's about how to actually experience Burning Man. How to let it in. How to not waste seven days in the desert doing the same things you'd do at home.
25 principles born from real burns, real mistakes, and real magic. Some will make sense before you go. Most will only click when you're out there.
Read them now. Read them again on the playa. And then throw this book away and live it.
Written for newcomers by someone who was one not long ago.
Andrew Will Skrypnyk is a Ukrainian-born entrepreneur living in San Francisco. CEO and founder of Promova — the leading language learning app recognized by Fast Company as one of the Most Innovative Companies in Education and by TIME as one of the World's Top EdTech Rising Stars.
He first went to Burning Man because a friend told him he had to. He didn't know what to expect. He came back different — and went back the next year.
This book was born from those two burns, from the principles his friend Olexi taught him, and from the notes he scribbled in a dusty notebook at 4am in deep playa. It started as a personal gift. It became something bigger.
Outside of building products, Andrew is a DJ, kitesurfer, snowboarder, longboarder, wakesurfer, flute player, and occasional golfer. He's traveled to 35+ countries — 30 of them in just a year and a half, living the nomad life and changing countries every one to two weeks.
He's been a Lego builder, basketball player, and F1 fan since he was a kid. He even spent four years teaching mobile development as a lecturer at Kyiv Polytechnic Institute — giving lectures and grading exams for students.
These days he's in San Francisco, raising a Canine Companions service dog named Zayne, and trying to apply playa principles to the default world — with mixed results.
The whole world is the playa. He's still figuring out what that means.
