“The songs we sang, the clothes we wore, the way we made love. Absolutely perfect!” —Publisher’s Weekly

Spanning the years from the optimistic post-War 1940s to the Mad Men 1950s and rebellious “Make Love, Not War” 1960s, DECADES is about three generations of women and the dynamic but flawed man they all loved.

Evelyn, talented but insecure, faithful to the traditional values she grew up with, is a loyal and loving wife whose marriage means everything to her.

Nick, handsome and ambitious, a chameleon who changes with the changing times, is her successful but restless husband.

Joy, their daughter, coming of age at a time of anger and rebellion, needs them both but is torn between them.

Barbara is the other woman. Younger than Evelyn, accomplished but alone, she wonders if she can have everything--including another woman's husband.

But can she? Is she willing to pay the price? And how will Evelyn handle her rebellious daughter, her straying husband and the threat to her marriage?

Sweeping in scope yet intimate in detail, DECADES is the emotional, compelling story of family and marriage, betrayal and healing.

DECADES REVIEWS:

“A brilliant book. Three generations of women are succinctly

capsuled in this novel by a writer who has all the intellect of

Mary McCarthy, all the insight of Joan Didion. Rarely have

attitudes been so probingly examined—tough, trenchant, chic and

ultra-sophisticated, Ms. Harris recreates the decades in which

her heroines lived, from zoot suits and Sammy Kaye, through

Eisenhower, Elvis and poodle-cut hairdos to moon walks, Mick

Jagger and micro-minis. Readers will be entertained and few will be

able to forget what Decades has to say about men and women and the

games people play.” —Fort Worth Star-Telegram

“A terrific novel about a singular single girl.” —Cosmopolitan

“Ruth Harris has re-created both the style and substance of three

decades of American life—from the bobby socks and innocence of

the Forties, to the crinolines and caution of the Fifties, to the

bra-less T-shirts and alienation of the Sixties.” —Book-of-the-Month Club

Powerful. A gripping novel that depicts the lives and loves of

three generations of women.” —Women Today Book Club

“I read Decades straight through at one sitting and the more I

think about that, the more impressive the novel seems.” —Houston Post

Babyboomers must read this book, for men and women. It takes you from the 1940's to the 1970's. It's thoughtfully and factually written about what life was like, especially for women and the tough rode that women have been climbing up for a long, long time. It would be great for other age groups to read as well. It chronicles how women were brought up, what was expected of them in certain time periods, how women coped with unrealistic expectations, how divorce was looked at, what type of fashion was in, and about abuse, dating, marriage and how sexual mores change over time. For babyboomers, it might give you a more balanced perspective of how your parents coped with the generation you were brought up in and why there where clashes in freedom to do what you wanted to as far as going out with friends to your sexuality. This is another book I highly recommend from BookBub. It's a very easy site to Google. By the way, I haven't mentioned this before, but they even have some textbooks you can get. Most of them are rather expensive, but some are reasonably priced. The other book titles you receive each day are much more affordable and some are free. Yes, I said free.

About the author

Ruth Harris is a New York Times and Amazon bestselling author and a Romantic Times award winner for “best contemporary.” Her emotional, entertaining novels have been praised by critics and sold millions of copies in hard cover, paperback, and ebook editions, and were prominent selections of leading book clubs including the Literary Guild and the Book Of The Month Club.

Ruth writes about strong, savvy, witty women who struggle to succeed and, when sometimes they don’t get what they want, they find something even better along the way. Critics have compared Ruth to Nora Ephron and Joan Didion and called her books "brilliant," “steamy,” "stylishly written," ”richly plotted,” “first-class entertainment” and “a sure thing.”

Readers' reviews include comments like: "I couldn't stop reading," "her plots seem so real I must keep telling myself it's fiction," "thought-provoking," "made me laugh and cry," "by far the best author I have come across in years," "suspenseful, hilarious and romantic," "wonderfully addictive," "you can't put her books down."

No surprise that Ruth is a writer. She grew up in a house filled with books, magazines and newspapers. Her Mom was an RN who had a trove of big-city hospital stories—some funny, some sad, some touching—and told them with great verve and style. Her Dad, noted for the beautiful gardens he created, loved words, word play and language, and he is remembered by those who knew him as "always reading."

As a girl, Ruth wanted to be a professional ice skater. In her teens, she wanted to be a lawyer—a summer job in a law office cured her of that delusion! :-) After college, she got a beginner's job in publishing and her career path—first as an editor and then as a writer—was set.

Ruth lives in New York City with her husband, Michael, author of two bestselling memoirs, THE ATOMIC TIMES: My H-Bomb Year at the Pacific Proving Ground and ALWAYS ON SUNDAY: An Inside View of Ed Sullivan, the Beatles, Elvis, Sinatra & Ed's Other Guests. Both are available in ebook editions.
