It's been months since Annalise's father asked for her and almost a full year since he's spoke to her. When she arrives at his chambers, she finds the room too hot from the fireplace going in summer and the room containing leeches, bloodied rags and various potions littered nearly every open surface. Her once proud and robust father now lying in bed. Looking like a ghost. He appears to be a hollowed out skeleton with eyes covered with a black film. He reminds her she will be eighteen within a few months and according to the law, she must be married before he dies or their family will lose the kingdom, since women are not allowed to rule. He's accepted an offer for her hand in marriage from Lord Damien Godfrey, a man she will meet sometime within the coming week. During this brief conversation, her father makes her well aware how little he thinks of her. To him, she is an inconvenience and a business transaction, even if a poor one. When Damien arrives and after the ceremony to announce the wedding will take place, Annalise is given three large snow leopards as part of her wedding gifts from her betrothed. They're very unusual, one with blue eyes, one with green eyes, and one with amethyst eyes. By now in the story you're hooked, just face it. Alice Ward has created a kingdom within a magical word that will take you on a rollercoaster ride through an intricate plot filled with characters so complex and multi-dimensional you'll be amazed. This is definitely a great story and what appears to be a tremendous series. One to watch and follow closely.

Annalise is one strong, kick-ass, take no for an answer woman. She just wants to rule, but her dying father has decreed that no women shall rule. In doing so, he has arranged to marry her off some unknown villain. However, with the help of her special furry men in disguise, she will fight to be free and save her rule. The was the first book I've read from this author and it really kept me glued to every page. Full of action, drama, suspense, and love, it was an excellent read. I would highly recommend it. Annalise finds herself in a sticky situation. Her father is possibly dying and bethroths her to a stranger. Her intended is not all that he seems and makes Annalise a prisoner in her own home. Worst of all is that Annalise's won't listen when she tells him that she wants to marry for love and that her intended is a cruel man. What's a girl to do.
