DESCRIPTION:

Victorian London: For five years, Charlotte (Charlie) Holloway has lived as a boy in the slums. But when one theft too many gets her arrested, her only means of escape lies with a dead man. Charlie hasn't raised a spirit since she first discovered she could do so five years ago. That time, her father banished her. This time, she brings even more trouble upon herself.

People are now hunting Charlie all over London, but only one man succeeds in capturing her.

Lincoln Fitzroy is the mysterious head of a secret organization on the trail of a madman who needs a necromancer to control his newly "made" creatures. There was only one known necromancer in the world - Charlotte - but now there appears to be two. Lincoln captures the willful Charlie in the hopes the boy will lead him to Charlotte. But what happens when he discovers the boy is in fact the young woman he's been searching for all along? And will she agree to work for the man who held her against her will, and for an organization she doesn't trust?

Because Lincoln and his ministry might be just as dangerous as the madman they're hunting.

I've read this series multiple times and I always enjoy it. I love a good mystery book. The series gets better and better with each book, and the characters develop nicely. I love that it's set in historical London. If you've only read the first I highly recommend going on to the second.

Multiple Mysteries This book is a page turner from the moment you begin reading. Character development is thorough and left this reader feeling like the characters came to life on the page. One mystery after another is slowly revealed as we learn more about the main character, Charlie, who, we find out, has been hiding something very important. When finally the mysterious V.F. was revealed I was happily surprised and gratified how well things began to be tied together. Read this as soon as you can. This is the beginning of another great series by C.J. Archer; personally I can’t wait.

This book has a fascinating premise and amazing first chapter. After that it all went downhill for me. I thought the idea of having a Necromancer as the main character in an otherwise semi realistic setting was really interesting. And then for some reason the concept is barely touched on throughout most of the book. Instead about a good half of the story consists of the main character being held against her will by the "good guys" and debates every five seconds where she says she's definitely not a necromancer and they say "you definitely are a Necromancer and we'll figure out how to prove it eventually." Combine this snail's pace plot with a third act twist that literally makes no sense and you have the recipe for an aggressively mediocre book. If this hadn't been free to download it would have been a waste of my money. I think what boggles me more though, is how there are TEN books in this series!!! I wonder if maybe i just missed the point or if the author's writing improved.
