The first time it happened, it seemed like an impossible miracle. Bills were piling up, adding up to more money than I could ever make. Mom's hospital bills. My baby brother's tuition. My tuition. The next month, I received another check, again from VRI Incorporated. It too contained a single word: "belong."

A third check, the next month. This time, two words. Four letters. "To me."

The checks kept coming. The notes stopped. Ten thousand dollars, every month. A girl gets used to that, real quick. It let me pay the bills without going into debt. Let me keep my baby brother in school and Mom's hospice care paid for. How do you turn down what seems like free money, when you're desperate? You don't. I didn't.

And then, after a year, there was a knock on my door. A sleek black limousine sat on the curb in front of my house. A driver stood in front of me, and he spoke six words: "It's time to pay your debt."

Would you have gotten in?

I did.

It turns out $120,000 doesn't come free.

Ratings and reviews

I really wanted to like this book but it was just... meh. I got about 40% through it before I just started skimming to get to the end. Kyrie was actually a good character in the beginning but her development only went down. Roth was insufferable. I was really hoping this would turn into a revenge story when [spoiler] was revealed, but alas, it did not. This felt more like bad fanfiction than anything else.

Wasn't sure if I was reading a published book or a teens tweet.. the writing is terrible. So repetitive and lazy. There are so many words in the English language.. This book contains mostly curse words. Got half way through and just gave up. Can't read anymore for fear I'll start talking like the writer wrote. Stupid story too. Gosh. And honestly it tried to be fifty shades of grey so badly it was hilarious. Fifty shades was atleast writteb a little better and not as repetitive. I'll stick to real authors.

it's like the Great Value Walmart version of Fifty Shades of Grey. This book focuses heavily on sex rather than actual story development of any kind. It drags on and I don't think anything about it is even remotely relatable or understandable. Well, except for the first chapter. At first her character reminded me of Fiona Gallagher and I was hooked, but as soon as she met Valentine she just went with everything. Over the course of a year he sends her $120,000 and then his driver comes to collect her. She just goes with everything he says and falls head over heels with him and she doesn't know anything about him other than he's good at kissing. It's mostly just him being elusive and having any kind of sex with her he wants. The whole time she just rolls with it. Which is weird. She was blinded by a blindfold for a good while and you'd think that not seeing the dude who's trying to eat you out would be a thing but nope. Not for her. Do not recommend. Boring. Weird. Cringey. Soft Porn
