About this ebook

Biography of Millard Fillmore (1800-1874), the 13th president of the United States, serving between 1850-1853. He was born in Locke Township, Cayuga County, New York to Nathaniel Fillmore and Phebe Millard, and he married Abagail Powers in 1826. After early activity in local and state politics, Millard served in the House of Representatives in Washington, D.C., and then ran for vice president of the United States in 1848, when Zachary Taylor ran for president. When Zachary Taylor died in 1850 as the 12th president, Millard Fillmore completed the term and became the 13th president. It was during his time in office that the Lopez expedition left from New Orleans to attempt to overthrow the Spanish colonial government in Cuba. It was also under Pres. Fillmore that Louis (Lajos) Kossuth (1802-1894), the Hungarian patriot and statesman, came to the United States, seeking support for his cause in Hungary. Otherwise most of Pres. Fillmore's term in office was was spent with internal problems (such as the fugitive slave law, etc.) leading up to the Civil War.
