About this ebook

"Thrilling and illuminating."—LA Times

"A hypnotic psychological thriller." —People

A chance encounter sparks an unrelenting web of lies in this new gripping and complex psychological thriller from the New York Times bestselling author of The Good Girl.

She sees the teenage girl on the train platform, standing in the pouring rain, clutching an infant in her arms. She boards a train and is whisked away. But she can't get the girl out of her head…

Heidi Wood has always been a charitable woman: she works for a nonprofit, takes in stray cats. Still, her husband and daughter are horrified when Heidi returns home one day with a young woman named Willow and her four-month-old baby in tow. Disheveled and apparently homeless, this girl could be a criminal—or worse. But despite her family's objections, Heidi invites Willow and the baby to take refuge in their home.

Heidi spends the next few days helping Willow get back on her feet, but as clues into Willow's past begin to surface, Heidi is forced to decide how far she's willing to go to help a stranger. What starts as an act of kindness quickly spirals into a story far more twisted than anyone could have anticipated.

I surely wasn't disappointed with this read. However, I did not enjoy it nearly as much as The Good Girl (5/5). I will say that this author's style of writing is brilliant! I love the way she develops these characters so that the reader is left to decide whether they are the "hero" or the "villian". I did take away a star though, because (in my opinion) the ending wasn't as well thought out as the rest of the novel. Well worth the read. Thanks Mary Kubica, I will continue following your work!

I decided to read this book after devouring The Good Girl in a single day. The premise was compelling, but towards the end things got a little slow. I wish the ending had wrapped up certain aspects of the story better. Overall, though, I did enjoy the book. I will definitely keep my eye out for any future works by this author. Her writing style is excellent, and the multiple perspectives are refreshing.

I had high hopes with this book because I loved the Good Girl but I was pretty disappointed. I started off liking the main character and thought the book was off to a good start and then it just all fell apart for me. I did finish reading because I wanted to find out how it ended but the ending was terrible.
