About the author

Ronald R. Watson, PhD, is a member of several national and international nutrition, immunology, cancer, and alcoholism research societies. For 30 years he was funded by Wallace Research Foundation to study dietary supplements in health promotion. Dr. Watson has edited more than 35 books on nutrition, dietary supplements, and over-the-counter agents, and 53 other scientific books. He has published more than 500 research and review articles. He has done DHEA research in mice for 20 years and has just completed an NIH grant studying DHEA in cardiac function in mice.

In a vicious cycle, poor nutritional health leads to acute and chronic disease, and disease states are catastrophic to nutritional health. The magnitude of nutritional depletion from any cause depends to a large extent on the nutritional reserves an individual has accumulated over time. In our increasingly older population, nutritional reserves are marginal and the magnitude of the effect on nutritional health is amplified. Strategies to improve nutritional health in older individuals require a unique approach and sensitivity to the individual’s needs.
