About this ebook

This book explores how we are to understand the normative value of scripture. In other words: Do the New Testament scriptures constitute a new law from God? Do they contain a blueprint or pattern of organization and work for the community of Christ's followers? Or do they point us to the source of life, from whom we receive the power to become what God has called us to be? Is the new covenant a covenant of tenets, or a covenant of life—a religion of the Spirit, a faith of lived experience and practice in which the new creation is being prepared to share in the very image of Jesus himself?

While the book addresses the ethos of legalism that permeates much of the teaching within the Churches of Christ—written by one who served for decades as a minister, missionary, and professor in Churches of Christ and in their parachurch institutions—its conclusions are relevant to all who desire to allow the New Covenant scriptures to be normative for their lives, in the way they were truly intended to be.

Even if you do not agree with all the author's conclusions, you will find his analysis to be fair, balanced, and thought-provoking. He urges readers not to dismiss everything he has written simply because something they disagree with with.

While the book makes no claim to offer a final word on the disciple's relationship with Jesus, it seeks to prompt a fresh evaluation of long-held views that the author believes are not only regrettable and spiritually harmful, but potentially damnable.
