Die hier erstmals veröffentlichte Ethikvorlesung spiegelt die Theologie Albrecht Ritschls (1822 – 1889) zu jener Zeit wider, als er mit seinem Hauptwerk „Rechtfertigung und Versöhnung” (1870 – 74) zum bedeutendsten evangelischen Theologen in Deutschland aufgestiegen war. Sie lässt die Impulse erkennen, die von Ritschl her auf die systematische Theologie, die Kirchengeschichte und die Ökumenische Bewegung des 20. Jahrhunderts ausgegangen sind und bis heute ausgehen.
