This is really a great novel. However, at times very difficult to read. Beautiful and mercilessly hideous at once. I couldn't not listen. I couldnt let the characters go

Excellent book and choice for this month. It is very deep and dark with messages and meanings - for life and love throughout the book. True love is not always easy as this story vividly portrays. It also gives a lot of insight to that time in history. Loved the book.

Intriguing, scary, and truths wrapped in spells and Jesus. Had to stop a couple of times. Always came back.

About the author

CYNTHIA BOND has taught writing to homeless and at-risk youth throughout Los Angeles for more than fifteen years. She attended Northwestern University’s Medill School of Journalism, then moved to New York and attended the American Academy of Dramatic Arts. A PEN/Rosenthal Fellow, Bond founded the Blackbird Writing Collective in 2011. At present, Bond teaches therapeutic writing at Paradigm Malibu Adolescent Treatment Center. A native of East Texas, she lives in Los Angeles with her daughter.
