تستخدم كل من عبارات التوثيق الإعلامي، والتوثيق الصحفي، والتوثيق الإلكتروني، وكذلك الأرشيف، والأرشيف الصحفي، والأرشيف الإلكتروني، وكل المصطلحات ذات الصلة بها، في إتجاهات عدة، قد تجلب معها بعض الملابسات والتخبطات. فقد إرتبط مصطلح التوثيق الإعلامي، مثلاً، بمصطلحين لهما أهميتهما الخاصة في أكثر من تخصص أكاديمي. فهنالك مصطلح "التوثيق Documentation" الذي لعب دوراً مهماً في تخصصات علوم المعلومات والمكتبات. وكذلك تخصص الوثائق. أما مصطلح "الإعلامي" فكما هو واضح فإنه إرتبط بتخصص "الإعلام"، أو كما يحلو للبعض تسميته تخصص "الصحافة". كذلك فقد يطلق البعض تسمية "التوثيق الصحفي" للدلالة على نفس الموضوع ونفس الإتجاه، وهكذا. وعلى هذ الأساس فإن هنالك مسميات عدة لها مدلولاتها المختلفة.
