About the author

Paul Gallagher has been a landscape photographer for over 30 years, dedicating his photography to Northern England and the Scottish Highlands and photographing predominantly using large format equipment. He began his photographic career studying graphic design and photography at Southport College of Art, England and gained a distinction in photography. This led him to work professionally in a commercial studio in Liverpool. Some years later, Paul was invited to return to teach photography part-time at Southport College. He has been awarded an Associateship from the Royal Photographic Society. Paul has mostly exchanged the dark room for the use of digital print production. Paul’s techniques are very traditional in the field and he is regarded as an expert in the use of the 5x4 view camera. All negatives are still hand-processed by Paul and are scanned to produce high quality files. In recent years Paul has embraced digital technology and now uses high quality digital cameras and prints almost entirely using digital printers. Paul is a sought-after lecturer and speaks at photographic societies and universities throughout the UK and abroad on his work and techniques in the use of large format equipment, digital cameras and on fine art digital print production. Paul runs workshops in the field for his company Aspect2i, of which he is a founder member, and he also leads class-based workshops for the Epson Print Academy of which he is co-director. He has received several commissions from organisations such as the Environment Agency and the BBC and his work has been used extensively by Epson, Ilford and Permajet to name but a few. Paul has written extensively for photographic publications about his techniques and approach to landscape photography and digital image production for many years. His book Aspects of Expression, discussing the expressive monochrome image, was commissioned by Argentum and published in October 2008. Paul’s fine art limited edition book Chords of Grey was published in 2010 and supported by a two-week exhibition in the gallery@oxo in London. Chords of Grey has achieved 5 awards to date.

The Art, Science, and Craft of Great Landscape Photography teaches photographers how to convert their visual peak experiences-moments of extraordinary natural beauty that evoke a sense of wonder and awe-into stunning images that elicit the same awestruck emotion in their viewers. Randall is an experienced wilderness photographer, and whether you want to venture into the mountains for once-in-a-lifetime shots of raw nature, or simply hone your landscape photography skills from the safety of your back deck, Randall explains the art, science and craft of creating astounding images.Randall begins by focusing on the art of landscape photography. He describes his three-step process for composing a photograph and shows how good composition is an organic process that begins with rules but ultimately transcends them. Randall then explores the science behind successful landscape photographs, which requires understanding key concepts from geography, optics, vision, and psychology. These concepts include:Understanding how the position of the sun at sunrise and sunset varies throughout the year, which will help you plan when and where to shoot.Understanding optics to predict where rainbows will appear, how polarizers will interact with reflections, and where to find spectacular light.Understanding how to use topographic maps and computerized mapping tools to help you find the most promising shooting locations in the wilderness. Understanding how our visual system analyzes images and the psychology of how we view art. These insights will help you produce successful photographs. Exposure is a central aspect of the craft of landscape photography, and Randall tackles the challenges of this topic from every angle-from tips on calculating exposures in the field, to achieving correct exposure in high-contrast lighting situations, to the best digital darkroom techniques.Great landscape photography can be mastered with practice and by applying the techniques taught in this book. The Art, Science, and Craft of Great Landscape Photography is intended for those who already understand the basics of photography and who are ready to master the finer nuances of creating magnificent landscape photographs.
