About this ebook

Seeds of a Dream: The Magic Inside Me is a luminous and heart-filled children’s book that blends scholarly depth with the warmth and wonder of a timeless bestseller. Rooted in the spirit of Richmond, California, this story invites young readers to explore a world where resilience becomes strength, imagination becomes possibility, and the magic inside every child becomes their greatest superpower. At the center of the story is a young girl named Shanice, born and raised in a city where palm trees sway above cracked concrete and hope grows alongside hardship. Richmond becomes a rich, living backdrop—a place filled with history, culture, vibrant joy, and undeniable struggle.

Guided by loving parents—a dedicated schoolteacher and a community-rooted police officer—Shanice discovers early on that knowledge, curiosity, and compassion are the keys to unlocking her future. Her mother teaches her that education is a superpower, while her father shows her the importance of community, courage, and standing tall with integrity. Surrounded by siblings, grandparents, and the embrace of her neighborhood, Shanice grows into a dreamer with a deep desire to serve, inspire, and uplift. Throughout the book, readers encounter the sacred presence of loved ones who shaped Shanice’s journey. The story honors her grandmothers, Elve and Selena Foster, along with cousins and childhood friends like Dimarea Young, Willie “Scooterdoo” Mulder, Sean “Shawnybo” Melson, and Joe “Fatter” Blacknell—individuals whose lives were touched by illness, violence, or injustice. Their memory shines across the pages like stars in a night sky, offering wisdom, protection, and a reminder that generations of love back every dream. Their stories help young readers understand the importance of remembrance, empathy, and turning pain into purpose.

As Shanice grows, her imagination becomes her compass. Whether she’s cutting pictures for vision boards, whispering prayers for strength, or dreaming of a future bigger than her circumstances, she learns that her inner magic is fueled by faith, creativity, and determination. She faces challenges—racism, transitions between schools, and the pressures of navigating a world that doesn’t always reflect her brilliance—but she rises through each one with courage and grace. With accessible language and a scholarly foundation, the book teaches children about resilience, identity, community, and the transformative power of education. Shanice’s story shows how she earned five academic degrees, including a doctorate, and returned to Richmond as a teacher and college professor. Her message to every child is clear: your voice matters, your dreams matter, and you are capable of extraordinary things.

Through scenes of multicultural classrooms, community gatherings, powerful historical lessons, and joyful celebrations of Black culture, young readers are introduced to the legacy of Black excellence—from Harriet Tubman’s bravery to Langston Hughes’ poetry, from the Panthers’ demand for fair education to Tupac Shakur's belief in inspiring others. Each reference is presented with clarity and heart, helping children understand that they walk in the footsteps of giants.

This book is a love letter to Richmond, a tribute to ancestors, and a guide for the next generation of bright minds. It is a testament to the power of dreaming boldly, standing proudly in one’s identity, and believing deeply in the magic within. It encourages every child—especially Black children—to know that they are not just part of history; they are its future. Seeds of a Dream: The Magic Inside Me stands as a hopeful, empowering, and beautifully crafted story that will inspire young readers to plant their own seeds of greatness and watch them grow.

She holds a B.A. in Africana Studies, a Post-Baccalaureate Degree in Ethnic Studies, an M.A. in Equity and Social Justice, and an Ed.D. in Educational Leadership, and has a Pre-Law and Paralegal Studies degree to expand her advocacy for system-impacted communities.
