Dive deeper into Navessa Allen's world

Navessa Allen is one of the biggest voices in dark romance. Author of the ‘Into Darkness’ series, her stalker romcoms have broken their way into the hearts of millions of readers.

Why do you think dark romance has seen such a rise in popularity recently?

I have seen this question debated across the internet almost to its death, and while the answer to it is complex, layered, and quite varied from one reader to the next, I’ll make this easy by speaking for myself. I think it’s popular because it’s safe. Dark romance is a subgenre predominantly written and consumed by women. It gives us a place to explore some of our more taboo desires, to work through past trauma, knowing that this time, we can simply close the book to end the experience, or, to read about love interests that are so obsessed with their counterparts, they would do absolutely anything for them.

What inspired you to make the leap from aeronautical engineer to romance author?

For me, the leap was easy. Because no matter what else I have done in my life, I have always been writing. My obsession started almost from the moment I learned to read. Even at that young age, I’d been creating imaginary worlds inside my head, and it was an easy transition to take those imaginings and put them down on paper.

Do you have a favourite character from your ‘Into Darkness’ series?

Fred. Hands down. He is the real main character of this series, and I will hear no arguments against that.

What’s your all-time favourite book?

Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen. I cut my teeth on the classics, and, for me, this is one of the few that really stands the test of time. I have reread it so often, I’ve lost count, and I am continuously impressed by how well the subject matter has held up in the 200+ years since its release. Austen’s dry humor, satirical take on dating, and contemptuous rebuke of the sad state of women’s rights is a large part of why it’s still so relevant.
