STAR TREK: THE NEXT GENERATION (TNG) focuses on the 24th century adventures of Captain Jean-Luc Picard aboard the U.S.S. Enterprise (NCC-1701-D). This incarnation of the famous starship is much larger than the one captained by James T. Kirk a century earlier, and, accordingly, it carries a larger crew complement: 1,012 men, women?and, surprisingly, children. This era's Starfleet Command believes that men and women are more likely to sign up for long-term exploratory missions if they think of their ship as home. Thus, Picard's crew enjoys many of the comforts they'd have otherwise left behind, including a wide variety of recreational opportunities, "replicated" food dishes to suit every palate, and quarters large enough to share with spouses and offspring. There are schools for the children and a bar (stocked with synthetic alcohol, or synthehol) where the adults can unwind. However, the ongoing mission-no longer limited to a mere five years-remains virtually the same as it was during Kirk's time: to seek out new life and new civilizations, and to boldly go where no one has gone before.
Knight Rider is a fantastic thrill-ride about a young man (international superstar David Hasselhoff) who fights crime with K.I.T.T., his super-advanced car. K.I.T.T. has the ability to think and talk, often chiding others with his hilarious witticisms. Great action, great fun, great car.
Sam Beckett (Scott Bakula) is a brilliant scientist with six doctorates, whose efforts to return to the present following a flawed time-travel experiment keep him bouncing back and forth in time replacing people he never knew or heard of. His partner on the Quantum Leap experiment, The Observer (Dean Stockwell), appears as a hologram only Sam can see or hear. The Observer is an eccentric quantum physicist, ex-astronaut, ex-Golden Gloves boxing champion and womanizer, who assists Sam in adapting to the different time periods and personas. This proves both challenging and amusing, providing high drama as the perplexed hero valiantly tries to live each life he's been forced to assume without any of that person's skills or knowledge. Quantum Leap is the promise of a second chance. With each leap, Sam is given the opportunity to make things right -- change the lives of the people he becomes for the better and in the end, hopefully, make the world a better place.
