The Jersey Devil is described as a flying biped with hooves that has been scaring townspeople for 300 years. In 1735, Mother Leeds exclaimed "May it be the Devil and gave birth to her 13th child"... a growling, shrieking abomination that killed the midwife then flew up the Chimney escaping into the Pine Barrens.
