From producer J.J. Abrams comes the 10 Cloverfield Lane and Cloverfield two-movie digital bundle. Get his latest edge-of-your-seat thriller, 10 Cloverfield Lane, and watch the hit film that started it all, Cloverfield.
The mechanism is the message in Cloverfield, a movie so aluminum-sleek, ultra-portable, and itsy-bitsy sexy, it's amazing Steve Jobs didn't pull it out of an envelope at Macworld.
I had a lot of fun with this inside-out take on the monster movie.
Under the modern flummery, behind the faux amateurism and the handheld shudder, Cloverfield is a vastly old-fashioned piece of work, creaking with hilarious contrivance.
J. R. Jones
The fleeting, incomplete glimpses of the monster early on prove the old dictum of B-movie auteur Val Lewton that a momentary image can have greater impact than a prolonged one.
Maybe we now live in a world where we record the moment first and feel it later. If that's the case, Cloverfield leaves us waiting to feel.
Smartly reconjures the 1950s monster movie for the digital age.

This.Movie.Sucks I admit, the behind the camera view was quite nice. I wouldn't be able to hold onto a camera personally if this scenario happened to me, but what I hated is that they kill off everybody, even the main characters, you have no idea where the monster/terrible reenactment of Godzilla went, or if it died or killed everybody. So spoiler alert, everyone dies. I'm not kidding. WHO KILLS OFF ALL THE MAIN CHARACTERS?!
The WORST EVER MOVIE Made! ! ! My second cousins, who average an age of three, could've shot a better film than this train wreck. Throughout the "film", a person records the events leading up to the monster's appearance and literally the entire movie is seen through that crappy camcorder to give you an idea how terrible this flick is. The final straw: The origin of the creature was NEVER revealed whatsoever and the film didn't have an ending either UNLESS you count the main characters getting crushed as an decent ending. EPIC FAIL! ! !
Awful Shaky Movie! The handheld shake throughout the whole movie is ridiculous and extremely annoying! I give it one star because of it. On the other hand the visual and special FX were very well done. But I wouldn't recommend it to a friend.
Don't waste your money or time Very disappointed, was shot like The Blair Witch, supposed to be shot on camcorder, made me dizzy. acting was horrible, one of the worst science fiction movies I have ever watched.
Everyone thinks they're a Critic. #myopinion You can not base how you feel about a movie only by the cinematography. Here there be story structure, character development, questions of background stories and production value. I pride myself on knowing and loving film. Films should leave us with unanswered questions and enough story to truly leave us wanting more. That being said, this part may be distasteful, do criticize a film PUBLICLY, if; 1. You will falsely "rate" the feature based on a belief. 2. You do not fully understand the English language.
Nauseating The story may have been good, but I don't know, because I couldn't watch it. In the theatre, I had to actually put my head between my knees, to still the vertigo from the filming style. It made me nauseous, and I had trouble walking back to my car. When I got home I had to lay down for a while to let the vertigo settle completely.
Camera visibility sucked! Unable to see things because of the camecoder movements. I can't stand movies that use video viewing from the characters to tell the storyline.. This movie could have been awesome, if thought outside the box.
Stfu it's jj abrams (Spoilers) Ok, everyone getting pissed about not much character development, a fucked up ending, and no explanation on what going on at all, GO WATCH A GODDAMN ABRAMS FILM. He doesn't do ending with closure, look at lost or cloverfield lane. I would've been surprised if he didn't kill off all the characters. If you don't like suspensefull movies without much information, don't see this. But if you love a good suspense thriller like that then this movie is right for you.
decent to all the shaky cam haters, get over it. so the audience comes in during a party, no backstory to speak of. all hell breaks loose. we then see bits of history of the main characters throughout the movie. the acton was suspenseful because not everyone will see everything while running and trying to survive and in a disaster not everyone lives, just ask those that died in indonesia a few years ago during the tsunami.
First time leaving a bad review on a movie This movie will leave you with more brain damage than you had before watching it. So if you like your brain well just don't watch it. If you like mindless movies with nothing but a series of events that have no meaning this is a good one for you.
Better than I suspected The shaky camera is too jarring in theaters but much less so on a tablet screen, so motion sickness was not an issue. The suspense is quite good. I couldn't stop till it was finished. Reminded me a little of District 9 in regards to the style.
Starts out like a cheap college party flik .. but the baseline turns out to be excellent in developing the character's motivations. Initially seems like a 'Blair Witch' shaky-cam spin-off, but then turns into excellent FX, realistic death & destruction. Soldiers act like real soldiers. There's no blatant stupidity. (Just ignore the obvious caveat about the camera battery life).
worth watching I went in to this with very low expectations, turns out this was a pretty good movie. I thought the camera shake factor was settle... nothing like the blare witch project. The ppl complaining about their 4 dollars or their precious time all have one thing in common, they certainly didnt turn the movie off!
More like Clever-field!!! lol Mild Spoiler* Movie has no starting point or ending that we physically see. What we get is the Experience of being there.. not technically, but the Idea of how it feels to be those characters.. and what they went thru. Then movie is shot through their eyes.. and its to give you a different dimension of action and terrifying scenes. This is highly recommended for real movie watchers.. just expect to want more.. i still do.
Saw in theatre.. Was sitting close to the front and spent half the time looking down at my feet because the jittering around drove me nuts . Kept waiting for it to smooth out it, just seems like it never really did. I do have to admit though when I saw that creature it was just disturbing.. in an evil dark way for some reason. Not sure why.
One star because it's mandatory. It was absolutely horrible in my opinion. All dialog was cliche. The acting was over the top. Blair witch with an alien. Other than computer generated items, this could be filmed better by a group of teens.
I like how the camera is shaky, as if it were really happening. All you haters gotta realize, movies aren't made the way you want them. Live with it and remember, they tried to make it look as if it were really happening in real life!
Why the hate? This was one of the first horror movies i ever saw and i still enjoy it. The camera shake is to show that these are frantic scared young adults and not experienced camera men this movies is amazing and worth your time and money
Undeserved hate, good movie. This kinda suck to see these childish reviews on here, but then again most of you probably aren't old enough to have actually seen it when it was one of the few good additions to the small group of found footage horror movies at the time before it became an unbearable and overused trope in modern media.
That movie sucked. It was a horrible ending. The only reason it was worth two stars is because the effects and camera handling were done pretty nicesely I would not recommend this movie to most people.
Shake IT off!!! I Hate low budget movies that wants to make it real with a "live" cam. Everything boring gets filmed and everything that you want to see, like big monsters and alien - type things dont!! Waste of my precious time...
Take a sea sickness pill Seriously, how do the absolute worst movies get such high ratings? I got sick from all the shakey camera footage. The "found footage" gimmick is really tired. How this foolishness managed to spawn an offspring (ie another stupid Cloverfield movie) is beyond me. It's a conspiracy I swear.
For a found footage movie it's really good. Before you decide to be an idiot and pay for this movie, you need to know that it's a found footage film. If you don't like that, you probably won't enjoy this movie. As found footage movies go, this is one of the best ones. It's original. The effects are good. the characters are believable. The first review that shows up spoils the ending so I'm just gonna assume you saw that. It has the ending that most found footage movies have. You don't usually find footage of people who are still alive.
Shakey cam for christmas This film plays like a found footage horror film. What it does do... It does well. The monster is kept at a distance so we can focus on the characters. Well done for such a low budget.
Story, effects, and actors are great! First off, the elephant in the room: yes, the video is shaky. But if are able to look past that, or if it doesn't bother you then you are in for a great movie. The special effects really are very scaled back, and not over the top - and that's a good thing! It's very realistic. Proof that not going balls-to-the-wall crazy on effects and monsters makes for a much better thrilling, suspenseful movie. The actors and story are also pretty great.
Keep watching. You won't regret it This movie starts off slow and boring. But about 30 minutes in it really grabs your attention. This movie is nothing like I've seen before and was worth renting. I gave it four stars due to the movie having a boring beginning but other then that it worth the rent. Enjoy!
Camera guy has a seizure The movie plot was bad enough but I had to sit through the camera guy taping the camera to a golf all hitting it on a sail boat in the middle of a hurricane while zooming in and out rapidly for no reason
Surprisingly Thrilling Great movie, didn't think it would be as good as it really was. The film resonates if you've ever lived or spent a substantial amount of time in NYC, some of street scenes with all the confusion and mayhem are reminiscent of 9/11. Great movie all-around.
So I completely understand people's complaints about the movie but I just really like watching people get eaten by giant aliens so for the death count alone this movie is awesome. It's by no means the greatest, but it does satisfy when I need to watch lots of explosions and junk.
Divisive Some think it's the worst, some love it (like Blair Witch Project), I'm on the "love it" side. It's more than a "Godzilla" movie, because most people care about the characters, not just the destruction. End leaves you wanting more, more clarity, more background, just like a great ending should (for those of us who don't want everything tied up neatly in a bow). You owe it a viewing, uninterrupted!
