I don't think writer-director Nicole Groton realized how relevant the excellent horror-thriller Darkness in Tenement 45 would become in 2020, with the plot echoing our own isolation this year as we fight against fear. Set in the Soviet Cold War era, this film follows lead Joanna as she butts against Martha, the de facto leader among the families of the tenement building who are trapped together following a biological attack leaving them unable to go outside. As food stocks decrease and tensions rise, Joanna must confront her own darkness and fight for hope over fear. I thoroughly enjoyed this tense and gripping story, which brings together some fantastic performances and a focused story. Recommend!
A film about generational power struggles during a quarantine from a deadly biological threat, it's amazing to think this film was completed before the coronavirus pandemic. A taut and claustrophobic psychological thriller that was ahead of its time!
