About this movie

This inspiring documentary about courage, survival, and triumph over adversity tells the remarkable story of teenager Malala Yousafzai, who was attacked by Taliban gunmen in Pakistan for advocating girls’ education. Rather than be silenced, Malala emerged as a global voice for the education rights of children, and in December 2014, became the youngest-ever recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize.

For many, the film might have undermined the issue that raised Malala into one of the leading global voices for the cause of girls' education. But I believe that, for a work of fiction to make an impact and raise questions and discourse, an artistic rendition is important. And that is what I find in He named me Malala. Yes, someone else could probably have done a better job at it. But hey, Guggenheim beat them to it!

Back in the 7th century, Muhammad (pbuh) declared that the pursuit of knowledge is obligatory on every Muslim – male and female. This declaration was very clear and was largely implemented by Muslims throughout history. One of the most influential scholars of Islam was Muhammad’s wife, Aisha. After his death, men and women would travel to learn from her because she was considered a great scholar of Islam.
