Not something I'll be buying but glad to see it. I looked away a few times as animals get killed but to be fair, this family was living out in the wilderness so I guess they had to. Otherwise, this was kinda funny and somewhat moving; the main characters were likeable and the acting was terrific. And since the protagonist, Ricky Baker, likes books and reading, I liked the touch of text at the bottom, dividing the movie into chapters with titles. The entire show was stolen however by the cinematography - I mean WOW, every single frame was so thoughtfully and beautifully shot that it's worth seeing just for THAT. So yeah, rent it and stuff.

Watched it cos my hubby wanted to!! He really liked it but wifey suffered it... one of those films that no matter how much you wanted to turn it off, you wanted to know the ending!!! My choice next time.!!

Makes me feel happy on a hard day. Full of little kiwiana surprises. Great cinematography, laugh-out-loud visual puns, along with the quirky wit that is Waititi.
