By 1974, Hackman is settling into a comfortable selection of roles that are
as iconoclastic and original as they are self-defining for Hackman as an
actor of the age. Here, we find Hackman and director Arthur Penn craft a
new phase take on the crime noir, masterfully immersed in the mid-seventies
anesthetic and deeply satisfying. Rounded out by a solid supporting cast
and an effusive jazz-themed score by Michael Small, and you have an
entertaining film that will stand the test of time.
