Action and adventure

Walter of Gurnie, a Saxon nobleman whose lands have been overrun by Norman invaders, organizes a revolt, but his efforts are quelled.  King Edward renounces Walter and Walter is forced to flee the country.  Accompanied by his friend, Tristam, an excellent marksman, Walter makes his way to the East with his sights set on riches and adventure. En route, Walter and Tristam are held captive by Bayan, a Mongol warlord.  While imprisoned, Walter meets Maryam, the beautiful "Black Rose", and romance soon blossoms between them.  When Walter and Tristam escape, Maryam joins them and accompanies them to China.  Once there, the Saxons are treated like royalty, but they are not allowed to leave.  Walter escapes and returns to England laden with gifts from Asia, including gunpowder, and he is welcomed with open arms.
