My paternal grandparents both came from Sweden about 1900 or so. The scenes in the movie are very similar to what they encountered in Sweden. My grandfather had to move heavy boulders to clear land, my grandmother grew up on a farm and her parents said we have nothing to give you (the farm would go to their son), go to America. I have seen the movie twice - yes it's long - but for getting a glimpse of similar family history it is well worth the time.

I highly recommend this movie for the historical content, the acting, all of it poignant and moving like you are there brings an understanding of the early euro pioneers in america

One of the best movies I ever saw. As good as Pelle the Conqueror, which has a related theme. Great world class acting and great historical recreation.
