About this movie

In early 18th-century England, a frail Queen Anne (Olivia Colman) occupies the throne and her closest friend, Lady Sarah (Rachel Weisz), governs the country while tending to Anne’s health. When new servant Abigail (Emma Stone) arrives, Sarah takes Abigail under her wing as she cunningly schemes to return to her aristocratic roots, setting off an outrageous rivalry to become the Queen’s favourite.

A pretty basic story told really inefficiently. The acting is on point and some of the dialogue is funny but it definately thinks its better than it actually is. Most of the pointed exchanges between characters only half land as we're constantly thrown between short vignettes rather than being led through a coherent story, almost as if we're watching 'Best Bits' fan edit of a better film. I can see why it was Oscar bait, it pushes some boundaries, but just isn't much fun to watch.

If I could give it zero I would. Absolutely terrible. By far one of the worst films I have seen in a very long time. I couldn't even finish the film it was so bad. Awful just awful. Even the camera work is terrible. There is literally nothing at all that is good about this film. AVOID

Not sure what film some of these reviewers watched, or expected. Not enough chase scenes or CGI? There was a fair amount of shooting though. It's a beautifully shot, written and acted piece, about an overlooked period of our long history, and has a power struggle between three women at the centre, all of that deserves your attention, and appreciation. If you want one liners and explosions, try a Mel Gibson box set.
