James Garner appears as a civilian guide through Indian territory and Bill Travers as an 'uptight' cavalry lieutenant escorting an ammunition shipment to a distant and isolated fort. Also on the trail with them is a retired army sergeant (Sidney Poitier), now breaking in military horses, and Travers' wife (Bibi Andersson), a victim of rape by Apaches. Her 'half-breed' child is the subject of ongoing racial tension. And Garner, who once had a Comanche wife, is bent on vengeance for her scalping. As this caldron of moving tension travels through the West, they will be beset by a series of violent Indian attacks.
Jim Douglas (Gregory Peck) rides into town the night before the hanging of four outlaws. He's been on their trail, believing they raped and killed his wife. But hours before the execution, the four escape, taking a beautiful young woman hostage. Now it's a murderous race to the Mexican border. Taking charge of the posse, Douglas tracks down the criminals one by one-until the stunning, powerful conclusion reveals a terrible secret that leaves Douglas more desperate for salvation than revenge!
In 1870, when white men and Indians are fighting bitterly, Tom Jeffords (James Stewart) strongly believes the Apaches are treated unfairly. After befriending their leader Cochise (Jeff Chandler) and arranging a truce, he is called upon by a U.S. Army general to negotiate a government peace treaty. Though he fulfills his mission, Jeffords soon experiences great tragedy when he, his Indian wife (Debra Paget) and good friend Cochise become targets of a renegade ambush.

When it comes to keeping the peace, former frontier sheriff Bob Valdez has always been the voice of reason in a sea of chaos. But Frank Tanner (Jon Cypher) is a very different sort of man: greedy, impulsive and rotten to the core. So when Tanner provokes a shootout that results in the death of an innocent man, Valdez orders him to provide financial support for the widow. But when Tanner not only refuses but also laughs in his face, Valdez dusts off his old uniform, straps on his guns and vows to exact justice and vengeance at any cost.
