About this movie

Rodgers & Hammerstein's® cinematic treasure, "The Sound of Music" is the winner of five Academy Awards®, including Best Picture. In this true-life story, Julie Andrews lights up the screen as Maria, a spirited young Austrian woman who leaves the convent to become a governess for Captain von Trapp's (Christopher Plummer) seven unruly children. Her charm and songs soon win the hearts of the children -- and their father. But when Nazi Germany unites with Austria, Maria is forced to attempt a daring escape with her new family.

Oh man, this was my cinema 'Nam! I spent so long trying to avoid seeing the whole film - I could only wade through a wee bit of nuns, Nazis and nippers before caving in and watching something - anything! - else. Seeing all of it a few weeks back, on reappraisal it ain't that bad. Good stuff, more fun than I expected. For more, see the full review: bit.ly/SoundMusic1965

It's one of the best musicals of all time and one most people here probably grew up with. Somebody said this could never be a real life situation when the Von Trapp family were real and this was inspired by those events...

It's a bit dry but it's not the worst film ever, I've seen worse; the acting is terrible, and this could never be a real life situation
