Watch the movie, THEN read the book This is a rare one that has to go in reverse order. If you watch the movie first, you have visuals. If you then read the book, it explains that it is all true and as you read, you will cry laughing. Promise!
One of the best Some of the greatest lines in movie history are in this film...infinitely quotable, and just insane sequence after insane sequence. A (somewhat) true story about one of the craziest trips 2 men could ever take to Las Vegas, while also being a commentary on how "The American Dream" is essentially the death-rattle of the 60's peace movement, presented in Terry Gilliam's signature visual style. Underrated, amazing performances from Depp and Del Toro, and quite brilliant overall.
Epitome of the search for the American Dream Thompson at his very best. The evolution of GONZO Journalism. He was the greatest American writer since Hemingway and on of my all time heroes. The world is a far darker and scarier place without Hunter in it to expose the depravity and decadence that is the mainstay of this movie. A must see for any true fan of the good doctor.ay rest in peace.
Great Portrayal of Hunter S.T.! Depp was great, as was Benicio! Hunter S. Thompson even said that Depp was brilliant, and the two became close friends afterwards & until Hunter offed himself! The special effects were so-so at best, but it's to be expected because of the times.
If you've never had the opportunity... To try psychedelics, this movie is as close to an accurate depiction of their effects as you're likely to find. Johnny Depp's seminal effort in this film is the embodiment of iconoclast Hunter Thompson.
Comic star Bill Murray is at his wildest as America's leading "Gonzo" journalist, Dr. Hunter S. Thompson, the legendary underground reporter whose passion for writing was second only to his love of weird chemicals, alcohol, violence and insanity. Along with best friend (Peter Boyle), Murray offers a manic look back at the Sixties and Seventies as an eyewitness to everything from a free-for-all San Francisco drug trial to a one-on-one bathroom interview with then Presidential candidate Richard Nixon. This off-the-wall comedy also boasts a musical score by rock superstar Neil Young.
From Oscar-winning director Alex Gibney and producer Graydon Carter comes a probing look into the uncanny life of national treasure and gonzo journalism inventor Dr. Hunter S. Thompson. A fast moving, wildly entertaining documentary with an iconic soundtrack, the film addresses the major touchstones in Thompson's life - his intense and ill fated relationship with the Hell's Angels, his near-successful bid for the office of sheriff in Aspen in 1970, the notorious story behind the landmark Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, his deep involvement in Senator George McGovern's 1972 presidential campaign, and much more. Narrated by Johnny Depp. MPAA Rating: R
