About this movie

A dark, dreamlike mystery plays out amidst the expansive farmlands of the American Midwest in this wondrous, storybook thriller. With her family's livelihood imperiled by the farm crisis of the 1980s, eleven-year-old Gitty (Peyton Kennedy) loses herself in a world of fantasy and make believe. But she stumbles into her own fairytale when she makes a startling discovery: a well-dressed mystery man (Richard Schiff) being held captive in her family's silo. It's the beginning of a labyrinthine journey that will turn Gitty's world upside down and force her to question her loyalty to her own family. The feature debut from director Anne Hamilton unleashes a torrent of gorgeous, stunningly surreal images as it immerses viewers in a child's imagination.

Spoiler Alert! I thought this was a family movie, so we watched it with the children. While we all liked the story, we did not like the bad language the parents used with the children, nor did we like Gitty finding pornography under Martin's bed. That whole scene & the next where she delivers it to Jonathan could have been left out as they didn't add anything to the story line. Additionally, the character development was confusing and in the case of Vera and the Ram Horned Helmet horse rider, non-existent. The movie ends without finding out who this mysterious character is & what they have to do with anything. Why did the boy want a grave stone & why tell this story? I think the movie trailer is a little mis-leading as I thought this was a fantasy (it is labelled as a thriller) with mythical creatures & alternate worlds mixing with our own, but that is just what she is dreaming or imagining. Other than that, we liked the friendship that Gitty developed with Jonathan, that she helped him, & tried to do the right thing. If it would let me rate 1/2 stars, I would rate it 3.5 stars, but since it won't, I have rounded up.

(Spoilers) Storyline had great potential but was overahadowed by unanswered questions and useless characters. Who was Vera? Why would Vera pay anyone money to hold someone hostage. She wouldn't gain amything from that. What happened to Ethel when authorities find her? What about Martin? This movie could have really been such a good thriller about what a father would do to keep his family safe. But instead it was kind of a crapshoot of plotlines.
