About this movie

In writer-director Noah Baumbach's, MISTRESS AMERICA, Tracy (Lola Kirke) is a lonely college freshman in New York, having neither the exciting university experience nor the glamorous metropolitan lifestyle she envisioned. But when she meets her soon-to-be stepsister and adventurous gal about town, Brooke (Greta Gerwig), Tracy is rescued from disappointment and seduced by Brooke's mad schemes.

I love Baumbach's other films and was disappointed by this one. Despite the strong dialogue and interesting characters, the need for story felt forced, particularly in the middle, when it became more intentionally and awkwardly comedic.

Fantastic, female-centric New York City film.... it's a buoyant comedy and a poignant story about finding inspiration to create art. Greta Gerwig is the perfect screen siren... a bit nostalgic (I was reminded of Barbra Streisand in What's Up, Doc?) and absolutely magnetic. The dialogue is fast, funny and the soundtrack is fizzy synth keyboards that keep the film floating even through the darker scenes. Highly recommended!
