A five year wait for a child is like half a lifetime. Such was the time period in my youth between the original movie (watching it constantly at close to every opportunity) and this sequel, which while much more complicated and unresolved compared to the first is still a terrific and fun flick. It sets up the rollicking finale and plays around with technology unheard of twenty years ago (much of which is _still_ not quite here but could be not far off).

It's not a great movie. But it still is fun to watch. The movie goes in a different direction from the first movie for a while, with the future and then the alternate Hill Valley. And after a while, they travel back to 1955, which made it the worst in the series. It's also somewhat dated. Fortunately, the movie is good enough to get you to the ending, which is shocking and leaves it open for a sequel. Props to the Christopher Lloyd and Michael Fox for saving this sequel.

Robert Zemeckis once said that if he had ever really believed there would be a BTTF 2, he certainly would not have concluded the first movie in a way that forces the storyline in part 2. Jennifer would not have gone to the future (a minor character who now requires a narrative character arc - they put her to sleep) and the storyline may not have involved their kids (originally, a subtle suggestion of the cyclical nature of time). Since it ended that way, that was the story we got. And, it works well.
